The dance is swinging and everyone is having a great time. Their costumes are hiding, disguising, and manipulating how everyone looks for one night. The music is blaring, punch decorates the wooden gym floors alongside streamers and balloons.
Oh look, a vision of beauty just walked into our little story. While a crooked step mother lurks in the corner fixated on her daughter’s imperfect hair, a Prince-like Jock demands everyone’s full attention at the center of the dance floor, and towards the door a good-hearted teacher surveys their students. By now you may be wondering how we got here:
(if: $cinderella is 1)+(if: $issues is 1)+(if: $fairygodmother is 1)+(if: $sister is 1)+(if:$stepmother is 1)[what will happen next [[Cind's time to shine ]]]
Tonight is the night, the halloween dance. People have been preparing for it all month long. I already know I won’t be allowed to go. Mother will never allow it, I don’t blame her, I am her step daughter not her biological daughter as she never fails to reminds me.
I know what I would wear if I could go, but I haven’t bought it.
After talking to Ms. Caoutte, I know what needs to be done. Mary and mother are about to leave. She needs to show up early to help set up, although everything is done. Mother needs to check because I helped during school. I may have ruined it, she did not need to say it, I heard it when she said goodbye for the night. Right before she handed me the impossible list of tasks. With help from my little friends, I finished over half of the list in an hour.
Now it was time to go, a quick trip to the shop and off to the dance. The school is not to far, but I’ll need to be wary of pranks. Being the only student egged every year sucks.
Now Mary is calling for me, I wonder what she wants.
(set: $cinderella to 1)The school bell rings, and like a swarm, the children rush out of the door. Amongst them is the charming Chad, captain of the football team. And of course, like every other captain of every other highschool football team, there is no shortage of girls that he could take to the dance tonight -- but he has yet to ask anyone, and time is running out. Chad was going to ask out Cind, but even though Chad found Cind to be cute, Cind has always been a social outcast. It would social suicide to be affiliated with someone so ….Different.
But Cind’s step-sister, Mary … well everyone expected the two of them to end up together. She was the most popular girl in the school, mostly thanks to her looks. Plus, Chad had heard the rumours that Mary would give it up easily. Was that something Chad wanted to [[find out tonight->Check phone]] or should he go to the [[dance by himself->get into car]]?
(set: $issues to 1)Not only was Ms. Caoutte The Faculty advisor and head chaperone for the dance she also was the most popular teacher in school. You might think that the reason for her popularity was due to the fact that she was only twenty five and very beautiful, and I’m sure that didn't hurt but the real reason because her classroom was a “safe place” for all students. You see Ms. Caoutte taught Cosmetology and her classroom was open before school, at lunch and after school for any student needing somewhere to go. The other students often referred to the Cosmo lab as the “LGBTQ” classroom, and that was ok with her.
She was hoping she would see Cind at the dance after complimenting her on beautiful decorations, but the impression that her mother might have other plans for Cind evening.
(set: $fairygodmother to 1)
The school bell rings, and like a swarm, the children rush out of the door. Amongst them is the ever so popular Mary Smith. She’s been looking forward to the dance for months now, it would be her chance to solidify her and Chad’s relationship before school ends. They went on a few dates last summer, but Chad stopped asking her out after Mary invited him in one day, only to find Cind covered in dust (for she had just finished cleaning the attic) and standing in the middle of the living room. Cind was Mary’s step-sibling, but the two barely interacted with each other; Mary was always busy with extracurricular activities, or going to the hottest parties, while Cind would be occupied with one chore or another. Mary had expected Chad to ask her to the dance, thus whenever a guy had asked her to it, she would reject him, and instead pair him with one of her friends -- quite a love-maker that Mary was. Unfortunately, this meant that Mary had neither a date nor any friends to go to the dance with and considered asking her step-sibling to the dance, but Cind would probably just say no and that their were countless things that had to be done before the day was over. Nonetheless, if Mary wanted, she could [[help Cind with the chores->Advocate]] or [[go to the dance by herself->Evil]]
(set: $sister to 1)
Well, no time to worry about Cind, fore Mary still has to get ready. Picking out her dress, she hands it over to Cind to gently press, and a matching pair of shoes for Cind to ensure sparkle like diamonds. Her hair also has to be done, so Mary calls to Cind to bring her curling iron while she dabbles her face with makeup. And then Mary notices a bird has pooped on her car, and asks Cind to clean it up, because Mary is too busy getting ready.
And as we all know the story, there is one task or another assigned to Cind so Mary can successfully get ready for the dance tonight. Time was short for Mary, she had to get to the dance early to make sure everything was set up before the party started, and hadn’t a second to spare.
Cind does not hold a grudge against Mary, because Cind knows that Mary is a complete airhead and oblivious to the silent torture the two Smiths put her through. Cind loves their step-sister, and does want her to be happy; but Cind also wants to be happy, and was hoping to be able to quickly finish the list of chores Mrs. Smith assigned to her for tonight, and sneak over to the dance.

(set: $evilsister to 1) Mary texts Cind

Cind:Can’t. Have too much to-do
Mary:I can help u finish.

Well the heart wants what the heart wants, but tonight Chad does not listen to that, he chooses to listen to the rumours. Turning on his phone, he quickly texts Mary and asks when she wants him to pick her up. Not the smoothest line, but it got a quick reply. She would be at the dance early, helping her mother set up. Chad almost wanted to ask if Cind would be there, but decides one conquest per night-maybe next week he would ask Cind out. They aren’t real sisters, there would be no backlash if he were to date both.
Chad starts to text Mary
What time should I pick you up
(sent 5:14 pm)
Now you know why our collection of characters are banned here tonight, it's time to decide what Cind should do with their precious time.
[[Talk to girl in corner]]
[[Find the prince->Dance with the prince]]
[[Go home->look at clock]]Cind glanced over into the corner where she saw a lonely figure sitting in the shadows by themselves as she approached she recognized it was Psyche the most popular girl in her class. She obviously looked distraught about something’ “Hi Psyche, Why so down?”
“I've been dating this new guy cupid online for the last few weeks and I thought everything was going great and we decided that we would meet for the first time here. It felt like we're going to take the relationship to the next level but he called me tonight and backed out. I get the impression he doesn't want me to see him”
"Maybe he's just really shy”., at least you're talking online”. Cind said trying to comfort Psyche,“I just wish someone would notice me for once“
[[Cind's time to shine ]]Cind decides to dance with Chad, she waltzes over to him. They start to dance in the centre of the crowd. Chad leans over and whispers something in her ear.
(if: $Jerk is 1)[He was insinuating that cind would not have to wait long for him, he would break up with Mary later that week. Than they could be together in every way. cind knew that this was wrong, she should not be dancing with Mary’s boyfriend. But she did not know that they were together, and there was something in the way that he said he would break up with her that made cind’s skin crawl. Cind shakes their head and tries to leave, he grabs Cind’s wrist and starts yelling at her. Saying that Cind was trying to seduce him when Cind knew he was dating Mary. [[look at clock]]]
(if: $advocatesister is 1)[Mary comes towards Cind, and they talk. Mary promises not to tell their mother about Cind's outting.]
(if: $evilsister is 1)[Mary is coming towards Cind. Cind has to get away before she is found out.]
(if: $prince is 1)[Cind and Chad dance, it feels like they have been dancing forever when the DJ announces the time. Cind can’t believe it and whips their head over to see the clock. [[look at clock]]]Cind looked at the clock to see it was almost midnight, she had to get home now. How would she beat her stepmother? She could [[run home]] and potentially pass her while she drives home. Something catches Cind's eye towards the parking lot, a young girl in red walking towards a car with something furry following her. Cind knows it's wrong but Cind could also look for open doors and [["borrow"->steal car]] someones car. (If: $advocatesister is 1)[ Mary had promised a ride home tonight, but she is nowhere to be found]
I bolt home, maybe if I cut through Winston Park, I’ll be able to pass my mom, and sneak in through the back door before she gets home. It’s a risky gamble, but how did I lose track of time so easily. 12 O’clock, that’s when Mom’s shift was going to end, all I had to do was leave before midnight. No time to think about that, I have to take of these fucking shoes, how the hell does anyone run in these without their feet bleeding. Maybe that’s the most unrealistic part of Cinderella, just her running home in those high heels of hers, without tripping and falling every 5 feet. Nonetheless, I need to take these off; I’ll be faster if I run barefoot. (If: $prince is 1)[Is it my imagination, or do I hear Chad calling out, telling me to slow down? I know I left him a bit blue-balled by dashing out of the dance so unexpectedly, but I didn't think he’d follow me so far. Nonetheless, I can’t afford to look around and check]
There’s a fence up ahead. Ill throw my shoes over it first, and then climb over it. After the fence I’m in the home stretch. Crap, I can only find one of my shoe, but I can’t waste any more time looking for the other. A pair of headlights zoom past me -- that's probably mom, I cant stand around another second, so with one shoe I run and I run straight towards my house.
As I reach the back door, I hear the car pulling into the driveway, all I have to-do is make it into my room and climb under the cover before mother can check on me. And I do. She’ll never know that I went out tonight, and I’ll fall into the same routine as I was in as if nothing happened tonight -- and as far as anyone else is concerned, nothing interesting happened tonight
The End (If: $advocatesister is 1)[Mary had promised a ride home tonight, but she is nowhere to be found] I find myself in the parking lot, maybe if I can take one of these cars, I could make it home before mother does. A silver Honda Civic Coupe, and unlocked aswell, perfect. There’s plenty of the same car parked in the neighbourhood, no one is going to notice another one. Please, please let the keys be in the dashboard … nope, glove compartment? … nope. Wait, maybe in the sun visor? I open it and … YES a key falls into my lap. I pick it up, turn on the car, the headlights and …. Shit, there’s Ms.Caouette standing right infront of me, and she does not seem happy. Alright, just play it cool, she doesn’t know this isn’t your car, and even if she does figure it out, just say it’s your friend’s and you’re the Designated Driver tonight.
“Hey Cind, nice car” she says to leaning over the driver window
“Oh, ahh, thanks Ms. Couette”
“Yeah, its funny because I drive the same exact thing” -- Shit, I think I messed up
“Well, uhhh, its a common car right?”
“Yeaaah. I just find it funny because mine is literally the exact same colour as well”
“Common colour I guess eh?”
“Mmhmm. And I parked it in this exact same parking spot”
Well, shit. I’m in some big trouble now.
“You’re in some big trouble now, Cind” Ms. Couette says as if she was reading my mind, “but this does seem quite out of character for you Cind. Tell me, what's bothering you?”
“I need to go home”
“I’ll give you a ride home, if you tell me what's bothering you”
And so I got out of the car and got back into the passenger seat, the car ride was long, silent and painful
“Tell me Cind. What’s up?”
“I don’t know Ms. Couette, I needed to get back home before my step-mom realized I was gone”
“She didn't let you go out tonight?”
“You’re not one to usually break the rules, why now?”
“Because, I really wanted to come to this dance”
“To impress your school mates?”
“No, to be myself”
A long silence passes in the car, I realize that I’ve been progressively getting angrier, so I take a deep breath and say: “All my life, I’ve been judged on how I look. We have all been. But that’s not the case tonight. We … I got to be who I was, without having to worry about how I look. It’s funny that everyone was masked, but it was tonight that people were finally themselves”
“Do you often feel like you have to hide who you are”
“Sometimes, I don't know. I'm just afraid”
“Afraid of showing the world who you are? Or that they won't accept you?”
“I don't know. Maybe both”
We pull into my driveway and I see all the lights to the house turned on. No doubt step mom was tearing the place apart to look for me; I was in trouble as soon as I stepped through the doors.
“I’m going to get an earful tonight”
“That you will. But listen Cind, no one should hide who they are. Maybe the world won’t accept you for you, but you can be yourself when you're with me. My classroom is a safespace, and you’re invited in it whenever you need it. You can be whoever you want, and people will respect you for you”
Ms. Couette was right, she always was. I knew that her classroom was a safespace, but I had always avoided going there because I was self conscious that even the people in it would judge me.
“Listen Cind, you don’t have to be afraid. I promise you, things may seem hard now, but they will get better”.
Getting out of the car and thanking her for the ride, I began to think that maybe she was right. Going in the house and confronting my stepmom was not going to be something easy, but it had to be done tonight. I do not have a charming Prince to save me and get me out of this household and accept me for who I am, no. I have to make things better for myself. Ms. Couette was right, things will get better.
The endWell the heart wants what the heart wants and for a second, Chad considers taking exit 3 from the highway, pulling into Mary and Cind’s driveway and asking Cind to the dance tonight. But the second has passed, and like any other day, Chad drives by the exit. Taking a deep breath in Chad now starts to focus on what to wear to the dance, when too leave to pick up his friends, and how annoying it is to be the Designated Driver.
Goes back to present at the dance

(set: $stepmother to 1)
All the month of preparing for one school function, put to waste as soon as Mrs. Smith found out Cind had helped put the decorations up today. There was no doubt in Mrs. Smith’s mind that something was going to be wrong with them, and if anything were wrong it would be her fault. Cind always messed things up, right when they were almost done. She once made a cake and slipped like the klutz she is, this is why Mrs. Smith was rushing Mary out of the house early, whatever cind had done, had to be redone.
Fixed before anyone could see it. After reassuring Cind that she could not go because of homework and chores, Mrs. Smith pulled out a list from her purse. She had been working on it since Ms. Caoutte complimented her on Cind’s decorating. The list had 40 things to be done before Mary and Mrs. Smith returned, they were all doable but would take her all night. If Mrs. Smith came back and there was still things not done, Cind would be looking at a military camp for the summer.
